Series GIF Recap: Oakland Athletics @ Toronto Blue Jays (July 24-27)

Things to Know:

  • SWEEEEEEEEEEEPPP!!!!!

July 24, 2017 (4-2 TOR)

The first game  didn’t start all that promising with Liriano walking the first 2 batters he faced. One would eventually come around to score but he really settled down after that and went on to pitch 5 innings while giving up 2 runs and striking out 5. The bullpen (Biagini [2 IP], Tepera, Osuna [S]), which will become a common thread in this recap, also came in to shut down the A’s allowing no hits for 4 innings. Although Martin hit a solo HR and both Zeke and Goins hit RBI singles, it would be Smoak’s bases loaded walk that would be the game winning run.

I think most of us accepted that the second game  was one the Jays would probably lose since it was Sonny Gray vs Cesar Valdez. Nothing against Valdez, but it’s Sonny Gray. And if the A’s played better defence Gray would probably would have had a W because out the 4 runs the Blue Jays scored off Gray, none were earned. Valdez also didn’t help the A’s while pitching 6 innings of 1 run game, it was impressive to watch and a bit of surprise.

July 26, 2017 (3-2 TOR)

I was at work for most of the third game (7/26) and the Jays could not get anything going against Blackburn. Estrada wasn’t as bad as he has been, but he still was not economical with his pitches allowing 2 runs and walking 4 in 5 innings. The bullpen again helped loads. Dermody, Leone, Loup, and Biagini (W) came in to pitch the rest of the game and gave up no hits and only 1 walk in 4 innings which allowed for the fireworks in the 9th inning. After a Donaldson walk, Smoak hit a 2 run home run to tie the game. Next batter Morales then smashed the first pitch he saw to walk off the A’s. It all happened so quickly and, my god, was it amazing.

If this is Marco’s last start as a Blue Jay there is something so poetic about his last pitch being a changeup.

July 27, 2017 (8-4 TOR)

Well this was an interesting game (7/27). The A’s took an early lead but neither team was really happy with the ump’s, Will Little, strike zone. And in the top of the 5th, having seen enough, Gibby made sure Little heard his opinion of his strike zone and got ejected. A couple pitch after, Little’s assumption that Stro was mouthing something towards him, ejected Stro as well. And because 2 was not enough he then ejected Martin for turning around to talk. Yup, in the span of what seemed like 3 minutes the Jays lost their manager, their starter, and their catcher who was hitting second. In honour of these great men the Jays then decided that they weren’t gonna lose this game and clawed their way back. In the bottom of the 9th, down by one Morales hit his second HR of the game to tie things up. Osuna came in to make sure Oakland sat right back down and in the bottom of the 10th old friend Liam Hendriks walked Montero, Smoak, and Morales to load the bases for Pearce. Pearce got in a 3-2 count and it seemed that if the Jays were gonna win this it would be via a walk-off walk, but Pearce had something better. Instead he hit a monster grand slam to left field that you had to watch to make sure it wouldn’t go foul. Man, winning is fun.

  1. LOL I love how you can see Sanchez digging through the cooler so he could properly hydrate Pearce when he arrived at home plate.

    1. OMG I didn’t even notice that. It was so automatic. Although I kinda miss the days when Ben Revere would bring the whole Gatorade cooler for a full on shower lol.
